A year in the job

Today marks one year since I joined DiData, it’s always good to take a moment and reflect at these times.

I’m very happy in my job, mostly. It can be a little boring since there’s generally not all the much to do, except for when there is stuff to do and then it’s crazy busy.

There have been highs -

  • I work with a wonderful bunch of people (although I’ll deny it to their faces)
  • I know the stretch of M4 between Bridgend and Bristol like the back of my hand
  • I know the layout of the mall at cribb’s causeway almost as well
  • I’ve done CheckPoint courses and exams
  • I’ve got involved in running one of the biggest networks I’ve worked with
  • The work ain’t difficult
  • Did I mention they’re a great bunch of people?

I’ve discovered that I’m a bit of an airplane anorak, so the following are also highlights of the job from working at Airbus -

  • I’ve seen the A380 (several times) and it’s an awesome plane
  • I see the last Concorde to fly every day
  • I’ve seen a Spitfire and a Hurricane (I think) flying around
  • I’ve been aurally assaulted by a Eurofighter Typhoon a couple of times
  • I’m certified to drive across a runway

Of course, there have been low points -

  • not getting a bonus sucked, especially after so much positive noise was made about us getting one
  • there was that cock-up with my pay review
  • at times the lack of challenge has gotten to me
  • the commute can be an utter nightmare, particularly with the M4 widening through Cardiff

But I think on the whole I’m very happy that I made the move, and the good stuff blatently outweighs the bad stuff.

Of course you can never say what’s going to happen in the next 12 months, but I’m sure that if I stay where I am, it’ll be another happy year.
